Alexander County Board of Education approves budget amendment, personnel items and multiple policies; votes carried unanimously

At a January meeting, the Alexander County Board of Education approved a series of routine and financial items by unanimous votes, including a state budget amendment that added $404,582 in state funds and several policy updates presented for second reading.
Chief Financial Officer Sharon Mahaffey presented Budget Amendment Number 3, saying the district had added $404,582 in state funds. Mahaffey reported the amendment allocates $22,142 for a third-grade reading bonus, $74,440 for teacher performance bonuses and $308,000 for a school safety grant allotment. Mahaffey asked the board for approval of the amendment; Board member Bowles moved to approve and Vice Chair Degenhardt seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The board also approved the consent agenda and routine personnel items presented in the human-resources section. A motion to approve the personnel items was made by Board member Arguelles and seconded by Board member Oxendine; the motion carried unanimously.
Sharon Mahaffey presented three policies for second reading: evaluation of student program progress; "Bullying and Harassing Behavior Prohibited" (policy 4329); and "Use of Unmanned Aircraft" (policy 4334). A motion to approve the second readings was made by Vice Chair Degenhardt and seconded by Board member Boles; the board approved the policies unanimously.
The board also approved the meeting agenda at the start of the session and later voted to adjourn open session and enter closed session. All motions announced as carrying were recorded as unanimous in the public record presented at the meeting.
Several items were placed on first reading for public comment and will return to the board next month, including web page development (policy 32207), testing and assessment program (3410), and student promotion and accountability (3420). Mahaffey said those policies were being posted for comment and would be brought back for action in a subsequent meeting.
No roll-call vote tallies by individual board member names were read into the record for most motions; the meeting minutes record motions as carried unanimously.
