Logan County Pride Festival permit request put on consent agenda; council raises insurance and contact concerns

At the Jan. 14 Committee of the Whole, the council reviewed a request for a permit for the 4th annual Logan County Pride Festival, proposed for Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Staff said the applicant had not yet provided insurance but that organizers plan to submit a policy closer to the event date.

Council member Miss McClellan said the application was unusually early — six months before the event — and asked whether that was the reason insurance documentation had not yet been filed. "I just had a couple of questions... I wondered if that's probably why they didn't have insurance yet, I imagine," McClellan said. Alderman Bateman explained why short-term event policies are common: "...those kind of event insurances are, like, 60 day or 45 day policies... it's too cost prohibitive... so we would probably bring ours... pretty soon... we won't have an insurance policy until just before the event." He said organizers often wait to buy coverage until shortly before their event because riders and short-term policies are typical.

Council members also raised concerns about turnover among nonprofit organizers and whether contact information on the permit remains current if the request is submitted far in advance. Staff said they would confirm current contact details and coordinate with the streets and downtown events calendars to avoid conflicts and to schedule road closures and other services as needed.

The committee placed the permit request on the consent agenda. No final permit or insurance documentation was approved at the Jan. 14 meeting; staff said insurance will be required before the event occurs and that final operational details will be coordinated closer to the June date.
