Manager: Pennways rollout of new trash and recycling carts is underway; borough urges patience and explains options

The borough manager gave a detailed update on the new trash-and-recycling cart rollout under the borough’s contract with Pennways, explaining the schedule, available accommodations and common resident concerns.

Manager’s update said Pennways was the low bidder in the borough’s recent solicitation and that the contractor’s new standard toters are larger than previous containers. The manager said applications for the borough’s banner program will open separately and that the cart rollout has generated many resident calls.

Residents who want a smaller cart can request one directly through Pennways; the manager said Pennways maintains a list for smaller-cart exchanges and will work through requests as their county rollout continues, with many exchanges likely in February. The borough also continues to offer ‘‘front-door’’ or assisted pickup for residents with disabilities or mobility challenges; the manager said Pennways will evaluate properties and determine eligibility for on-property pickup.

The manager asked residents to be patient as Pennways completes swaps and noted borough staff have provided flyers and handouts describing options. The manager also reminded residents that if they place additional bags next to the new tote, the borough’s prior rule applies: extra bags require a yellow tag available from borough hall. The manager encouraged residents to call Pennways directly for the exchange list but said borough staff will assist where necessary.

The council did not take formal action on the update; the manager said implementation will continue through the contractor and the borough office.
