The Santa Fe City Council Finance Committee on Jan. 13 approved a $7,182,098.05 construction contract with Vital Construction Group LLC to demolish and reconstruct the commercial terminal ramp at the Santa Fe Regional Airport.
The contract, which the committee set as a four-year agreement for administrative purposes, will fund phased demolition and full reconstruction of the ramp that serves commercial aircraft and ground service vehicles. The bulk of the project will be paid with Federal Aviation Administration grant funding, with the New Mexico State Aviation program contributing $1,000,000 and the city covering roughly $137,000, staff said.
Airport staff described the ramp as beyond its useful life and stressed the work is required to strengthen pavement and drainage to safely support heavier aircraft. Interim facilities staff and the airportproject team said the reconstruction will include full demolition down to the subgrade, rebuilding the pavement structure to handle aircraft weighing up to the design load, reworking underground drainage and adding commercial aircraft parking space.
"The pavement has buckled because of the weight of the aircraft weare getting in," Facilities Director Harris said, describing visible settlement and the need to expand and strengthen the ramp surface.
Project manager James Guardino and project administrator Sebastian Gallegos told the committee the contractor will build out work in phases so airport operations can continue. Facilities staff said they planned to stage a concrete batch plant on site and expected the physical work to be completed much sooner than the four-year contract term, which officials said includes time for warranty work and administrative amendments.
Molson Korbin (architect/engineer) prepared project specifications, and staff noted the design and construction must meet FAA standards for airfield pavement and drainage.
The motion to approve the contract was moved and seconded; a roll-call vote recorded Councilor Cassett, Councilor Lindell, Councilor Lee Garcia and Chair Romero Wirth as voting yes. The motion passed.
