Residents press La Grange trustees on detour traffic, speeding and flooding mitigation during public comment

John Pluto of East Avenue and other speakers said heavy commercial traffic and speeding have become daily problems on side streets that are being used as detour routes for a multi‑year construction project. “The cars are flying down that street at 40 miles an hour,” Pluto said and urged the village to install clearer speed signage and to consider school‑zone speed limits and solar‑powered warning signs at problem intersections.
Wilson Penn, who said he earlier raised the issue in November, said there was an improved police presence for a short period — with 80 tickets written on 10th Avenue in one week — but that enforcement has since lapsed. Penn asked whether the village continues to advocate for stopping northbound detour traffic at Plainfield Road; staff said the detour and traffic control involve county and state agencies and that the village will continue to meet with Cook County and relevant agencies about patterns and mitigation.
Resident Laura West asked for an update on planned flood‑mitigation work in the Sunset/LT Westfield area north of 47th Street. Staff said there is momentum and that the village hopes to have significant progress to announce soon and that staff will investigate whether an open sewer relief point at a corner could be returned to a closed configuration in the interim.
Trustees acknowledged the concerns and said they would continue to advocate with county and state partners on detour routing and enforcement, and staff said they will raise the neighborhood safety issues in upcoming coordination meetings with the county and IDOT.
