The DeSoto County School Board used its Jan. 14 meeting to honor district employees and to announce a small state payment to the general fund.
Superintendent Dr. Bennett recognized Angela Butts as the district teacher of the year, invited her family to the front of the room for photos and praised her long service to the district. “Angela was honored to be nominated not once at memorial, but twice,” Dr. Bennett said, and added that he was proud to support her at the state level.
The board also named Samantha Burge the school-related employee of the year; Dr. Bennett described Burge’s work in the finance department and said, “we're just really blessed to have her.” Jamie Atherton was recognized as rookie teacher of the year; Dr. Bennett noted Atherton’s background through the district education foundation scholarship program.
Separately, Dr. Bennett informed the board and public that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, under Commissioner Wilton Simpson, provided a check for $6,172 through the Peace River State Forest Management Group. The superintendent said the amount is the district’s annual share of timber revenue and that the funds will go to the general fund. He said a department representative usually attends, but this year the check was dropped off.
The recognitions included brief remarks and photographs; no board action was required or taken to accept the payments or awards during the meeting.
