State representative and senator urge cooperation, tout local business wins at Covington County meeting

State Rep. Matthew Hammitt and Sen. Josh Karnley addressed the Covington County Commission on Jan. 14, urging local leaders to work with state officials on economic development and infrastructure needs.
"I'm Matthew Hammitt, I'm your representative for district 92 in Montgomery," Hammitt said, introducing himself. He told the commission he and Karnley are "invested" in the county: "We both have businesses in this county," Hammitt said, naming his business as Hammock Drilling and saying Karnley runs Sandbook Insurance. Hammitt cited incoming private investment and workforce training opportunities, saying, "We have Sims Bar coming into Florida" and that local community college career-technical programs can train residents for new jobs.
Sen. Josh Karnley, who said he had previously served in the commissioners' seat, asked the commission to use him and Hammitt as conduits to state agencies and programs for matters such as economic development and the Department of Transportation. "If you need us, reach out to us," Karnley said, adding that he values the commission's service to the county.
Commissioners thanked the lawmakers for offering assistance and noted prior conversations on a county issue the lawmakers have been helping to resolve. The remarks were introductory and informational; no formal county action followed from the visit.
