Nevada council appoints Brian Hanson as interim mayor until special election

The Nevada City Council appointed Brian Hanson as interim mayor on Jan. 13, 2025, to serve until the next election is certified.
A committee of past mayors, citizens and three council members recommended Hanson after a call for applicants, formal interviews and a scored evaluation. Council members said both applicants were well qualified and that the process produced a close result.
Council members described the choice as intended to provide continuity through the certification of the next election. The council moved to appoint Hanson and the motion carried. After the vote Hanson took the oath of office and was administered the mayoral oath by city officials.
Council members who took part in the appointment process thanked the candidates and the committee for their work, describing both finalists as experienced local leaders. The council did not amend the committee recommendation during the meeting.
The appointment lasts only until the election results are certified, at which point the elected mayor will assume the office. The council also directed administrative staff to process necessary election and transition paperwork connected to the office.
No ordinance or statute was cited as a legal impediment to the appointment during the discussion.
