Retired Army officer says he found worn flags at Tonganoxie schools; superintendent says weather caused delay in replacement

Colonel Neil Brawley, United States Army (retired) and a Tonganoxie resident, told the Tonganoxie Unified School District board at its Jan. 13 meeting that he observed three unserviceable flags at Tonganoxie High School on Jan. 10 and two unserviceable flags at Tonganoxie Middle School the same day.
“I find it troubling that I should have to inform the USD or any member of the school board or district that your flags need replacement,” Brawley told the board during the public forum. He suggested students or the student council could help monitor and maintain flags and proposed lowering flags at the end of each day to reduce wear.
Superintendent Lauren said she forwarded Brawley’s email to the district maintenance crew and that replacement flags were put up when conditions allowed. She told the board crews could not get the flags down earlier because they were frozen after the recent heavy winter storm. “We couldn’t get the flags down. They were frozen. And so that’s why today was the first day we were able to put new flags up,” she said, and acknowledged she should have replied to Brawley’s email sooner.
The issue was raised during the meeting’s public forum and did not prompt formal board action.
