Zoning Committee holds special-use permit for 607 Magnolia Street after public comment

The Zoning Committee voted 7-0 on Jan. 13 to hold an ordinance (case 2401645, U-2430) seeking a special-use permit for a barber and beauty shop at 607 Magnolia Street.

The motion to hold the item followed a public comment from Miss Adams, who told the committee she had intended to speak specifically about the application. "I think I wasted my time because I wanted to speak specifically of that item," Miss Adams said. Committee members and staff explained state law bars the public from speaking at the committee on matters already before the Zoning Review Board and said the item will not be decided by this body today.

Director Holmes read the caption for the ordinance as "an ordinance by zoning committee for a special use permit for a barber and beauty shop and similar personal service establishment pursuant to section 1618 S006 for property located at 607 Magnolia Street." After the caption, a motion to hold the item was made and seconded by Council Member Marcy Collier Overstreet; the committee recorded a 7-0 vote in favor of holding the item.

Committee members told Miss Adams she could continue to contact council members individually and that she had the option to email the council. Miss Adams said she had already emailed council members the night before the meeting.

The committee took no substantive action on the permit at the Jan. 13 meeting; the ordinance remains held. The committee noted ordinances for first reading will be sounded at a Jan. 21 meeting, but no further action on this specific permit was taken at the Jan. 13 session.
