The City Council adopted Resolution No. 6352 to establish a standing Public Engagement Committee to advise staff and council on civic engagement strategies, with a particular focus on youth participation and outreach to Spanish‑speaking and underrepresented residents.
Staff said the committee will be a Brown Act standing committee (ongoing, no sunset) and assist with outreach tools, communication methods, and recruitment strategies for boards, commissions and volunteer roles. Membership as presented at the meeting includes two council members to be appointed at the Jan. 13 meeting; the council appointed Council Member Wade Nomura and Vice Mayor Monica Solorzano to serve on the committee.
Staff explained the committee may invite stakeholders and community members to participate informally and will organize meeting schedules and agendas through the City Manager’s office. Council members and public commenters discussed whether separate standing committees or subcommittees might focus on youth, Spanish‑language outreach or other specific groups; the council decided to start with the single standing committee and members noted the council could refine roles or create separate bodies later if needed.
The council voted in favor of the resolution in a voice vote. Staff said the committee will be noticed under Brown Act rules and will return information to full council for direction at public meetings.
