State broadband planning identifies Lee County as top priority with about 8,300 underserved households

County administration staff reported that state broadband planning has designated Lee County as a high priority for infrastructure funding and that about 8,300 household units were identified as unserved or underserved.
Jeremy told the committee the BD program linked to a roughly $1 billion state allocation for broadband infrastructure has placed Lee County high on the priority list. “We have about 8,300, household units that have been identified as underserved or unserved. That is that that tops the list, for counties in Illinois,” he said. He added the county is working with internet-service providers and the state on wave-1 strategies to identify PAUs (priority areas units) and that the county expects to have a mapped strategy by the end of the month; Jeremy said he hopes to see infrastructure laid “this coming summer.”
Why it matters: county officials said the designation increases the county’s chance of receiving state-funded broadband construction in early deployment waves, which could expand internet access for thousands of households.
No committee action was taken on the briefing; staff said they will return with more details once wave-1 PAUs are defined.
