Anacortes — The Personnel Committee reported Jan. 13 that the city made one internal hire in December, currently has 15 open positions and is intensifying police recruitment efforts ahead of planned PST testing in June.
Councilmember Fantini gave the update, saying the city retained an employee by moving him into a maintenance-tech position in streets and sewer and noted two exits including one retirement. Fantini said police recruiting will include PST testing for entry-level officers in June and that the city will attend several college career fairs this winter and spring.
Fantini also said an MOU for a new police dog — described as a search-and-rescue and narcotics-capable canine — will come before the council soon. He said a neighboring department (reported in the transcript as "Seadrill Willie Police Department") is also acquiring a similarly trained dog so the animals can be shared on a schedule.
Why this matters: Staffing levels and recruitment affect service capacity for public works and police functions. A shared K-9 MOU would define joint responsibilities and scheduling between departments.
Next steps: The city will bring the MOU forward for council consideration and continue recruitment activities.
