Parks staff report progress and problems at Goldman and Sherman parks

Parks staff and board members on Jan. 13 described completed and pending work at Goldman and Sherman parks, including a playground surfacing color error at Goldman, edging and trim work at Sherman, and coordination of new citywide signage.
Parks staff said the playground equipment at Goldman Park is installed but that the contractor used the wrong surfacing color. "They picked the wrong color," a staff member explained; staff have discussed options with the contractor, including a discount or credit so the mistaken surfacing could be used at another site or replaced at Goldman. Board members cautioned that the new play area should not be used until backfilling and finishing work are completed.
At Sherman Park, members said edging and trim around a basketball court remain to be completed and that a different court material installed at Oakland demonstrated superior grip in wet conditions, though at a higher cost. "It was about 50% higher," one member said of the alternative court product, and the board agreed to compare long-term performance and cost before pursuing similar material at Sherman.
Board members also discussed entry signage. Economic development staff are coordinating a citywide signage upgrade for city facilities, and park signage at Sherman and other sites will be updated in phases to match the new standard.
The board asked staff to follow up on pricing for additional work — including possible sod installation at Goldman and completion of the trim and edging at Sherman — and said they would revisit funding sources at the next meeting.
