Mister Sorensen, trustee and the board treasurer, told the Sweetwater County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees on Jan. 13 that he will lead monthly finance workshops beginning in February to help trustees better understand the district's budget and spending.
Sorensen said the goal of the workshops is to “focus on kids” while giving trustees practical financial oversight. He told the board that historically trustees received a budget book in July, accepted it and relied on an annual audit in January; he said that approach is insufficient and proposed more active monthly review.
“I love numbers. I’m a CPA. I love numbers. Because numbers tell a story,” Sorensen said, adding that the district budget is largely personnel-driven and needs close attention. He said roughly “85% people” of the budget means supply cuts are limited in effect and the board should concentrate on how personnel and related services are allocated.
Sorensen asked trustees to send questions in advance so administration can prepare and said he had found sample treasurer reports that show month-by-month budget consumption. He proposed starting the one-hour workshops before the board’s February meeting at 5 p.m. so trustees can review regular reports in more actionable detail.
Chairman Wright and other trustees signaled support for the idea during trustee reports; no formal action was taken at the Jan. 13 meeting on the workshops themselves.
If implemented as Sorensen outlined, the district would add recurring, board-focused financial briefings and new monthly tracking reports to show whether spending by category is on pace with the year-to-date budget.
