The Hampton City School Board used part of its Jan. 8 meeting to publicly recognize the Phoebus High School football team for winning the 2024 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 4 state championship — the program's fourth consecutive state title.
Dr. Mason introduced the recognition and invited Coach Jeremy Blunt, members of his coaching staff and the team to join the board in front of the chamber. The board presented the team with a banner, certificate and school-board coins and showed highlights from the championship game captured by Steve Fryer of Arpeg TV.
Coach Blunt thanked the board, staff and families, calling the senior class "an exceptional journey" and praising the players' effort and the community's support: "This senior class...they have left a long legacy behind that's gonna certainly...last in those hallways," he said.
Board remarks noted the team's record and historical milestones recorded during the presentation: the Phantoms completed a 15-0 season for back-to-back undefeated seasons, the team won its 11th state title in 23 years, Coach Blunt's program record was cited as 146-19, and Coach Blunt was named VHSL Class 4 Coach of the Year. The presentation referenced the regional championship at Darling Stadium on Nov. 30, a state semifinal win Dec. 7, and the state championship game Dec. 14 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Why it matters: the recognition celebrates student-athletes and highlights a sustained period of competitive success for Phoebus High School athletics.
Ending: The board presented awards and congratulated players, coaches and administrators before moving to the remainder of the agenda.
