County accepts $18,177 JAG grant to support Central Wisconsin drug task force

Chair Gibbs signed paperwork accepting a Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) for Marathon County that the committee reported at the Jan. 14 meeting as $18,177. County presenters said the award is split between Marathon County and the Wausau Police Department and is applied to support the Central Wisconsin Narcotics Task Force (formerly CDAG), which works narcotics enforcement, overdose investigations and larger conspiracy cases across the region.
The presenter said the task force has expanded from a small local unit into a larger multi-jurisdictional team that now includes personnel assigned with FBI coordination. Staff described the unit growing from about four members historically to roughly 11–12 assigned investigators, conducting cases that can travel across counties and states. Committee discussion noted that federal partnership gives access to greater resources and the federal prosecutorial and forfeiture systems, which can aid larger investigations and potentially return seized assets to support local work.
No committee vote was required to accept the grant; Chair Gibbs had already signed the acceptance paperwork because the application window and award notification required prompt action. Committee members treated the presentation as informational and asked clarifying questions about the task force’s scope, staffing and interstate activity. The county indicated the funds will continue the existing practice of splitting JAG funding for the regional drug task force.
