Finance and public‑works staff told the council that in fiscal year 2024 Fairhope received $181,573.77 from the Rebuild Alabama 1¢ gas tax (the state program commonly called the 1-cent gas tax), and that qualifying resurfacing and rehabilitation projects for the year totaled about $1.8 million, with the local share from the gas-tax receipts representing roughly 10% of those expenditures.
The staff presenter said he had prepared and submitted the annual August report listing roads qualifying for the use of the tax and would present the January accounting of receipts and qualifying expenditures as required by the program’s reporting schedule. He also said the city maintains the authority to propose a municipal gas tax and gave an example of per‑penny revenue as a planning figure; he framed that as informational rather than an imminent proposal.
Why it matters: the Rebuild Alabama 1¢ gas tax provides a dedicated revenue stream for resurfacing and related road rehabilitation work; reporting on receipts and eligible uses is a statutory or program requirement for recipients and helps the council and public understand what portion of local road work is supported by the state allotment.
What’s next: staff will finalize the required schedule reports for the program year and continue to develop road priority lists for upcoming resurfacing and rehabilitation work.
