Vermillion board sets 2025–26 school year to start Aug. 20 and end May 19

The Vermillion School District 13-1 Board of Education approved the district calendar framework for 2025–26 on Jan. 13, setting staff in-service days for Aug. 13–14 and the first day for students on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025, with a planned last day of school on May 19, 2026.
Dr. Elby presented the three calendar options previously provided to the board and recommended Option 2, which begins student attendance a week later than the district’s traditional start date. He said the later start “gives them a little more time to have time with their kids or still have some summertime activities.” The option keeps the main structure of in-service days, parent-teacher conferences and vacation lengths, with final placements to be returned to the board in February.
Board members discussed the placement of in-service days, the possibility of shifting some professional-development time into spring data days, and options for orientation schedules for incoming students. One board member asked whether expanding the Christmas break could push other calendar dates; Dr. Elby said that adjustments are possible and that the board met its statutory obligation by setting the start and end dates at the January meeting.
A motion to approve the Aug. 20 start and May 19 end dates carried with a voice vote (first by Mark, second by Carol).
