Charter commission sets meeting schedule; staff to arrange rotating county locations

The Whatcom County Charter Review Commission adopted a meeting schedule at its Jan. 6 inaugural meeting and asked county staff to arrange a rotation of off-site locations around the county.
Commissioners approved a schedule for the next three months calling for meetings on the second and fourth Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m.; the clerk read calendar dates that include Jan. 13, Jan. 27, Feb. 10, Feb. 24, March 10 and March 24. Commissioners asked staff to prioritize off-site locations so the commission can better reach residents across the county.
Staff and commissioners discussed suggested venues that have internet and public access, including the Ferndale Public Library, Linden Public Library, Blaine Public Library, Deming Public Library, the Lummi Indian Business Council chamber and the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center. The commission passed a motion directing staff to work with those and other sites, emphasizing geographic balance among the county’s five council districts.
Kirsten Smith, the legislative analyst assigned as staff, said the county can provide Zoom panelist links to commissioners for remote attendance when needed. The commission also discussed how to sequence Bellingham-centered meetings versus outlying locations so the schedule is equitable.
