ASAC hears public comment on proposal to move 401 students from Del E. Webb to Charles A. Silvestri Middle School

At a Jan. 13 public input meeting of the Clark County School District Attendance Zone Advisory Commission, staff presented a proposal to reassign 401 geographic students from the Del E. Webb Middle School attendance zone to Charles A. Silvestri Middle School and took public comment.

Tracy Murphy, director of demographics and zoning for the Clark County School District, described the proposal as prompted by large master-plan development in west Henderson that is expected to increase middle school enrollment in the Del Webb zone. Murphy said using available capacity at Silvestri Middle School could provide enrollment relief to Webb Middle School and that ASAC may recommend grandfathering currently enrolled students in grades 6 and 7 so only incoming sixth-graders and new enrollees would be reassigned each year.

Two parents spoke during the public comment period for the item. "I'm very sad to hear that Clark County is considering, rezoning him," said Xavier Fontes, a parent of a current sixth-grade student at Del Webb, who said he wants his son to finish all three middle-school years at Del Webb. Katie Hendrickson asked about how grandfathering would affect siblings, saying, "So I was asking about some of the meetings I've been to about grandfathering and siblings, and that was said, well, it won't happen." Hendrickson said she has a current fifth-grader and a younger child and asked whether siblings attending during the same time would be included under any grandfathering policy.

Murphy and commission members did not take action on the proposal at the Jan. 13 meeting; the session was a public-input-only meeting for ASAC to gather comments. Murphy said ASAC will consider public comment and discuss the proposals at the ASAC meeting on Jan. 21, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. in the Edward Greer Education Center Board Room, 2832 East Flamenco Road. Final ASAC recommendations will be forwarded to the superintendent and then to the Board of School Trustees for consideration on Feb. 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

Procedural votes taken during the meeting included adoption of the meeting agenda and a subsequent motion to adjourn; those procedural items passed by voice vote and did not change the status of the rezoning proposals.

Details of the M2 proposal provided at the meeting described the reassignment area as: south of Star Avenue, east of Bermuda Road, south of Berry Avenue, west of Amigo Street, north of Saint Rose Parkway, and east of I-15 to Star Avenue. Staff characterized the figure of 401 as "geographic students" in the area subject to the potential boundary change.

Next steps: ASAC will hold a deliberative meeting on Jan. 21, 2025, and any formal recommendation would move to the superintendent and Board of School Trustees for decision in February. The district provided multiple ways to submit input, including a comment hotline (702-799-0239) and an email address noted in the meeting materials.
