The airport's proposed capital projects received mixed results from the town's capital program committee, airport manager Billy Coburg told the Nantucket Memorial Airport Commission on Jan. 14.
Coburg said the committee recommended a set of airport projects that includes a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) truck, supplemental PFAS fund authorization, gate art stands, ground‑support equipment (GSE) storage, a septic upgrade at the ARFF station, routine paint and markings, and a combined equipment project (a GPU, preconditioned air unit, a tug and a bus). The committee also revisited and included the proposed noise‑barrier project in its recommendations after an additional presentation earlier that day, Coburg said.
Two airport projects were not recommended for funding at this annual‑warrant advisory stage: the ARC station repair and the employee housing townhouse. Coburg said the committee suggested the airport split the ARC request into components and prioritize roofing work before returning with a refined request. On the townhouse project, Coburg said committee members expressed concern about expanding housing eligibility in a way that could conflict with FAA revenue policy; he said he was disappointed by the lack of a recommendation and expects the project would face further scrutiny if resubmitted.
Commissioners who attended the capital committee process described it as advisory and said the airport could still pursue financing through the finance committee or a future special town meeting after refining designs and cost estimates. Chair Arthur Gasparo and other commissioners thanked staff and consultants for providing additional schematic material that, they said, helped secure the committee's reconsideration of the noise‑barrier project.
Coburg said the airport will refine schedules and pursue the recommended projects through the annual town meeting process and will divide and rescope the ARC repairs to address the committee's feedback.
