Committee hears Sconset concerns; members urge impartial review and caution on static barriers

Committee members updated each other on recent meetings with Sconset community groups about the Bluff Walk and adjacent public ways and amenities.

Rick Atherton and other committee members described a recent meeting with representatives of the Sconset community, including civic and trust groups, to discuss concerns about the Bluff Walk and possible interventions. Atherton reported the local group remains concerned about the bluff, public access and safety.

One committee member summarized an early impression: "Static barriers will not work," and urged that any committee advice be impartial and practical. Members acknowledged that static fences or turnstiles invite vandalism and stressed enforcement and collaboration as central to any durable solution.

Members discussed prior inventory work, takings accomplished by earlier committees and the need to consider broader community views beyond the most active local organizations. Staff and committee members said more outreach would follow and asked members to share comments one-on-one to avoid open-meeting-law issues while staff and the Sconset group work toward a mutually acceptable report.

Committee members agreed to continue meetings with Sconset representatives and to bring a considered, impartial recommendation back to the select board when appropriate.
