Council holds closed session on property interests for West Verona Ave. project; staff to report back

The Verona Common Council convened in closed session on Jan. 13 to discuss acquisition of property interests related to Project ID 2023-112 (West Verona Avenue and Legion Street). The parcels identified in the motion were: (1) property owned by Dane County Housing Redevelopment LLC; (2) the Betty M. Peckin Irrevocable Trust parcel (which includes a Subway), and (3) the Sugar River United Methodist Church property. The motion to go into closed session passed on a roll-call vote (8–0).
After returning to open session the council chair reported the body had “an interesting discussion” and said staff would provide additional information as it became available. During open session, staff member Miss Wright requested authorization to sign offers to proceed with negotiations; city counsel commented that, based on the closed-session vote and unanimous consent, authorization was effectively in place.
