District to relocate Netti Hartnett program to intermediate center; administration cites building conditions and cost savings

Superintendent Dr. Adams announced at the Jan. 13 USD 453 board meeting that the district will relocate the Netti Hartnett program to Suite 2 of the Intermediate Center for the 2025–26 school year, with the move effective in August 2025.
Adams said the decision was driven by three factors: student and staff experience concerns at the current Netti Hartnett facility (including heating problems noted during near-term weather events), the building’s need for significant repairs, and the operational savings from reducing the number of buildings the district must heat and maintain. He said staff and families were notified the day of the meeting and that the district would provide supports for the transition.
The district plans to add a secured entrance and treat the relocated program as a “school within a school” to maintain separation and appropriate security for students served by the program. Adams said a secured entrance could be installed after school is out and before the next school year begins, and that staff and students will have the second semester to plan details at the building level.
District staff said the relocation would affect roughly 30 students and approximately 15 staff FTE; Adams emphasized affected individuals will be offered positions and the district will work with staff willing to transfer. He said the archive room and the district’s virtual program would be assigned to other staff members for relocation planning.
Adams said no vote was required for the announcement and that formal action about the building’s future (sale, closure, capital projects) would come back to the board as needed. He said administration would provide regular updates on the relocation progress and operational details leading up to summer move-in.
