The Bellflower City Council on Monday approved the Parks and Recreation Department’s proposed special events calendar for calendar years 2025 and 2026, a two‑year schedule staff said will help align event planning with the annual budget process and improve coordination.
PJ, a Parks and Recreation staff member, presented the calendar and said the department will bring an updated biannual calendar to council each January. "Approving this calendar tonight will enable staff to move forward with the detailed planning required to deliver high quality, well coordinated events and programs for our residents," PJ said.
The proposed calendar lists roughly 28 city-run events over two years and highlights items with dates or details still being finalized. Staff said the two‑year approach is new for Bellflower but will help schedule staffing, vendor contracts and coordination with other community organizations. Council members discussed inclusivity of events — for example, expanding holiday home‑decorating contests to include multifamily units via photo submission — and asked staff to develop accessible participation options for renters and apartment residents.
Council Member Wendy Morris moved to approve the calendar and Council Member Dan Coops seconded. The motion passed by unanimous roll call (5–0). Council members thanked the Recreation staff for the breadth of programming and asked staff to return with details if new events are added during the year and with options to increase participation across districts and housing types.
Staff said smaller or unplanned events would continue to be accommodated from a miscellaneous-events budget line but emphasized that major changes or additions should be considered through the budget process so staffing and resources can be allocated appropriately.
