Staff to correct survey: 516 Center Avenue reclassified as contributing property

Village staff informed the Historic Preservation Commission Jan. 8 that the property at 516 Center Avenue had been misclassified in the 1998 survey and should be listed as a contributing property.
Clare (staff) said the owner contacted the village after an e-newsletter and asked why the house was marked “not contributing.” Staff consulted the Lake Bluff History Museum and the consultants who prepared the 1998 survey; both recommended that the categorization was likely an error tied to a recent addition at the time of the survey and that the record should be corrected.
Staff prepared a memo applying the National Park Service standards used for the village’s survey. The memo documents the house’s historic features and compares photographs of the property from the mid-1960s with later alterations. Staff concluded the core 19th-/20th-century elements remain and that the house merits contributing status for district purposes. The memo and an addendum will be added to the survey file and the map on the village website will be updated to reflect the change.
No commission action was required; commissioners received the memo as information and staff said the map and survey records will be updated accordingly.
