The Recreation Centers of Sun City West will begin using color‑coded wristbands to identify guests at recreation centers, libraries and sports facilities starting in February, staff told the governing board on Jan. 10.
Sabrina (staff), who presented the proposal, said the wristbands will replace the current receipt system and will include two styles—one for guests 19 and older and another for guests 18 and under. Staff will record the date and the member number on each wristband to prevent reuse on other days.
"Once you get your wristband on that initial check‑in...that guest can now go to another rec center," Sabrina said, describing how the bands would ease member check‑in and guest mobility between facilities.
The board also discussed three options for multi‑day guest passes: (1) no change (one‑day pass used the same day), (2) an additional one‑day pass allowing purchase for the following day, and (3) an additional two‑day pass. Staff recommended caution about longer pre‑purchased multi‑day passes because of the potential for short‑term‑rental abuse.
Director Novello and others said wristbands will reduce loopholes associated with receipts and that operational exposure is similar today under the receipt system. Staff said they do not currently track which individual guest (for example, a grandchild versus a friend) uses multiple visits, although reports can show how many guests a particular member has brought overall; further IT improvements are planned.
After public comments and discussion, the board reached consensus to move the guest‑pass proposal to the governing board's regular meeting for a formal vote on whether to adopt an "additional 1‑day" or "additional 2‑day" option. Operations will implement wristbands in February irrespective of that vote.
Ending: Operations will start issuing wristbands in February. The governing board will consider a vote on the multi‑day pass option at its upcoming regular meeting.
