Planning board approves G Lock Sports retail use at 72 Whisner Avenue; parking arrangement documented

The City of Middletown Planning Board on Jan. 8 approved an application by G Lock Sports LLC to open a retail sporting-goods store at 72 Whisner Avenue, recording a written offer from a nearby business to provide two to three parking spaces and noting that available parking will otherwise be on the street.
Joe Alvaro Fernandez, owner of G Lock Sports LLC, told the board the store will sell sporting equipment across categories and feature an in-store attraction: a punching bag that analyzes kinetic energy, speed and endurance. Fernandez said customers will largely use on-street parking.
Board members received a written letter from Jonathan Devilato, owner of Angel and Son Premier Auto Spa at 80 Whisner Avenue, granting G Lock Sports permission to occupy two to three of the auto-spa’s parking spaces when needed. The board entered the letter into the record.
Planning staff and the fire representative cautioned that the two-to-three spaces offered by the auto spa are located behind Nygren’s (down a lot) and are not immediately adjacent to the proposed storefront; they are a short walk from 72 Whisner. Michael Guadere, the fire department representative, also noted the nearby firehouse parking is for department members and is not a municipal lot available to the applicant.
The board voted 4-0 to approve the resolution for G Lock Sports after public comment was closed; the motion was seconded and the roll-call vote was recorded yes from all members present.
No additional conditions were recorded at the meeting. Staff asked the applicant to submit the written parking authorization for the file and to address any follow-up items required by planning staff.
