Norfolk Middle School special-education teacher Teresa Waters named January Award for Excellence

The Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education presented the January Award for Excellence to Teresa Waters, a special-education teacher at Norfolk Middle School.
Board member and awards committee representative announced that Waters had multiple nominations from Norfolk Middle School staff highlighting her dedication, student-first approach and work to teach life skills to vulnerable students. "There is no limit to what she will do to ensure their safety and happiness," the committee report said during the meeting.
Waters received a plaque, a $50 Hy-Vee gift card donated by Hy-Vee, and $500 to spend for Norfolk Middle School programming. Mary Brown, a colleague, described the nomination and introduced a student video shown at the meeting.
Speaking to the board, Waters thanked colleagues and administrators and credited her co-teacher, leadership and special-education team for support. "I just I wanna say thank you to the team that has surrounded me," Waters said. She added that leadership at the middle school helped her fall "in love with teaching all over again."
Board members praised Waters’ work and invited family and supporters to stay for the remainder of the meeting or to leave to celebrate privately.
