Council approves purchase of software services, adds licenses for police and community development

The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday voted to authorize the city manager to purchase software services under a New York State contract and to transfer funds to cover expanded licensing and cloud services, including Microsoft 365, Azure (used for license plate readers), Veeam backup, Wasabi cloud storage, and Splashtop SOS remote-support software.
City Manager Dan Creighton and IT staff said the item had been removed from a prior agenda because the packet initially listed only Microsoft 365; the revised request sought roughly $40,000 in funding for a combination of additional licenses and cloud services this fiscal year, up from about $23,000 the prior year. Al Perez and Rich DePalma joined staff to answer council questions.
Staff said the additional Microsoft 365 licenses total 17: 10 licenses to support police operations and 7 for community development (some of the latter for interns). Staff also explained the Azure licenses relate to the expansion of the city’s license plate reader network; Veeam is a backup product, Wasabi will be used for cloud records storage, and Splashtop SOS will be used for technical-support connections.
Council members requested a follow-up email with licensing terms and annual ongoing costs; staff agreed to provide that information. The council adopted the resolution on a recorded roll call: Bridal — yes; Lester — yes; Reinhart — yes; Miyamura — yes; Finn — yes.
