City Manager Bryant Powell told the council that Apache Junction saw a substantial increase in single-family home permits in recent years: 67 permits in 2022, 935 in 2023, and an expectation of about 1,655 going forward, a change Powell characterized as roughly a 1,300% increase over the period cited.
Powell presented charts staff use to visualize permit activity and said the development services department has taken on a much larger workload because of the increase. "To help understand the jump or the change that's happened in development services, I wanted to show, the pie chart and show the numbers of 67 single family home permits, in 2022, and it jumped to 935 in 2023 to 1655, which we expect the number to be right around that," Powell said.
Separately, staff announced a free Christmas tree drop-off service at two locations in the city, coordinated with Pinal County sites, to reduce fire risk from dried trees and to discourage roadside disposal. A city staff member identified as Eli said the tree drop-off service runs through Jan. 31.
Powell said the development services workload increase reflects broader changes in the housing and construction environment; he did not provide revenue or permit-fee projections tied to the additional permit volume during the Jan. 7 meeting.
