Graham Elementary students present library advisory board; student rep reports athletic and academic successes

Graham Elementary’s 4th‑ and 5th‑grade Library Media Center advisory board presented to the Board of Education on Jan. 13, and student representative Emily Shield reported successes from Waubonsee Valley High School including athletics and upcoming scholar recognition events.
Graham Elementary Principal Rachel Witkowski and student members of the school’s Library Media Center (LMC) advisory board described the program and its activities during the Jan. 13 Indian Prairie CUSD 204 Board of Education meeting.
Witkowski introduced the LMC advisory board as a volunteer library service organization for 4th and 5th graders that meets during recess, supports library events, assists younger students, helps shelve and sanitize returned books, and plans activities such as themed reading days and book fair assistance. Student presenters Maria Schwagler, Aya Faisel, Liam Walls and others described tasks including shelving books, delivering materials to classrooms, helping with book fair previews for kindergarten, and planning events; students said the group increases student ownership of the library and fosters a community of readers.
Separately, student representative Emily Shield, reporting for Waubonsee Valley High School, highlighted extracurricular and athletic achievements: chess won the DuPage Valley Conference (DVC) title and prepared for IHSA postseason play; the scholastic bowl competed for a DVC title; the speech team hosted its largest tournament with 20 visiting schools and more than 600 students; and girls basketball stood at 16–1 overall and undefeated in DVC play. Shield also noted an upcoming Indian Prairie Scholar Ceremony in February recognizing more than 300 seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher and listed invited alumni for the district’s Hall of Fame events.
Ending: Board members praised the student presenters and the LMC advisory work; the spotlight highlighted student leadership in supporting literacy and student success at both elementary and high school levels.
