He described operational problems when neighboring municipal K‑9 resources were unavailable and said county jurisdictional coverage and long response times from distant K‑9 teams are reasons to consider a county unit. The sheriff also reported that detail revenues and mutual‑aid calls can be unpredictable; his office brought in significant revenue from outside details in the last year but expected a lower outside‑detail budgeted amount for 2025.

Committee members raised questions about liability, insurance, and long‑term costs should the program persist after grant funding ends. Several members said they support the concept but want the sheriff to secure grant funding and gain explicit support from the county commissioners before adding the overtime funding to the county operating budget. The sheriff said he would pursue grant opportunities and return with a clear funding plan if a grant is awarded.

The committee made several line‑item adjustments to the sheriff’s budget (including minor equipment and software support edits) but did not vote to add a recurring K‑9 overtime appropriation during this meeting.
