Interim Police Chief Tony Araujo announced at a news conference that West Palm Beach will tighten security around the Green Market on the West Palm Beach Waterfront and the adjacent Antican Flea Market, including street closures and vehicle barriers, "to provide a safe environment for our visitors and residents so they are safe and they feel safe."
Araujo said the street closures will be in effect between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will surround the market sites. Streets listed by city officials include North and South Flagler Drive, South Dixie Highway, North and South Olive Avenue, and North and South Narcissus Avenue between Banyan Boulevard and DeTura Street. Officials said vehicles will be placed to block those streets so no one can drive through.
Araujo attributed the step in part to the "deadly New Year's attack in New Orleans," saying the incident shows that "you can be well postured, you can be secure, and things happen." He framed the measures as efforts to prevent or displace threats rather than eliminate all risk. The measures were announced at a police news conference; officials did not state how long the closures will remain in place beyond the daily hours reported.
City officials also changed the Green Market schedule. The market will run Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through April 26. The announcement directed people seeking additional information to wpb.org.
Cheryl Kahn of WPB TV reported the announcements at the news conference.
