Committee waives hearings for two liquor-license business transfers in Elyria

The Elyria City Council Community Development Committee considered two liquor-license matters and recommended that the city not request public hearings on either transfer.

The committee reviewed a request from GEFCO Inc. to transfer a permit to VMP Enterprises LLC for 645 Cleveland Street (permit classes C‑1 and C‑2, carryout beer and wine sealed containers). Committee members reported no police or zoning objections and, after a motion from Councilman John Callahan and a second by Councilwoman (Ms.) Mitchell, members voted to waive a hearing and carry the committee report.

The committee also reviewed a stock transfer for Red Lobster Hospitality LLC doing business as Red Lobster, 6935 Midway Boulevard (permit classes D‑1, D‑2, D‑3 and D‑6, on‑premises liquor; hours noted through midnight/1 a.m.). Law Director Deery explained the filing represents a change in corporate ownership only and not a change to the type of permit or hours. The committee found no issues with police or zoning and, on motion and second, voted to not request a hearing.

Why it matters: Local liquor-license transfers are routinely referred to the committee by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control and the committee’s recommendation either clears a transfer without public hearing or schedules further review. Waiving a hearing makes the municipal recommendation final and moves the applications forward to the state process.
