Goodyear council selects Wally Campbell as vice mayor in 6-1 vote

The Goodyear City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to appoint Councilmember Wally Campbell as vice mayor for a term beginning Jan. 7 and continuing through December 2025.

Vice Mayor Laura Cano made the nomination during the council's Jan. 6 induction ceremony, saying, "Yes, thank you, Mayor. I'd like to nominate Wally Campbell for vice mayor." A councilmember verbally seconded the nomination. After brief remarks about the workload of the office, councilmembers voiced their votes and the motion passed 6-1.

The nomination came during a ceremony that included swearing in newly elected councilmembers and remarks about the city's rapid growth. Mayor Pizzillo noted the pressures on the vice mayor's office, saying, "as has been mentioned earlier, we've been the 9th fastest growing city in the state," and that the position receives multiple same-day requests as the city grows.
