County to set hearings, approve bridge and road projects; several maintenance and paving projects headed to Jan. 21 agenda

Key items presented included: - A request to set a public hearing on a road vacation related to property on Johns Prairie/Johns Creek Corner; staff recommended a hearing date of Feb. 26 to complete title cleanup and allow a pending sale to proceed once the vacation is complete. - A packaging of paving and maintenance projects to appear on the Jan. 21 consent/regular agenda: the Shelton-Matlock-Brady Road paving (about 1.2 miles), Wrap (WRAP) project funding requests for Colquallum Road and other maintenance items, a community-development block grant-funded sanitary project (Evergreen Estates), and a gravel-to-paved conversion on Maples Road. - A request to purchase prefabricated steel superstructures (to replace deteriorated timber superstructures) for several small-span bridges (Beeville Loop Road/various named crossings). Staff said the timber superstructures date to the early 1950s and are deteriorating; prefabricated replacements are the most cost-effective option for short spans.
Public Works staff and commissioners discussed access issues on remote roads (Beeville Loop), average daily traffic counts, and the county's strategy to acquire modular emergency bridge components for faster deployment rather than expensive full replacements. Staff noted that some short-span structures do not qualify for certain state bridge replacement grant programs (CRAB/BRAC) and must be replaced locally.
Commissioners asked questions about timing and the county's plan to reduce high-cost lease overhead for workforce centers discussed earlier in the meeting; Public Works staff said the projects will be brought forward on the Jan. 21 agenda for formal board action.
A hearings-examiner process will follow for the road vacation; no final sales or construction contract awards were approved at the Jan. 14 meeting.
