Resident raises safety concerns after motorized vehicles use La Center trails; council asks police to follow up

Resident Dennis Hill told the Jan. 8 La Center City Council public comment period that neighbors had observed motorized bikes and quads using city trails, including instances when a vehicle towed a small trailer with scrap lumber. Hill said the incidents occurred on the trail north of Foothill Estates and cited La Center Municipal Code 10.07.025, saying it is unlawful to drive a motor vehicle other than a bicycle on city trails.
Hill said he found a “no motorized vehicles” sign at one trailhead but not at another entrance he checked, and he asked the city to install signage at additional trail entrances and to investigate enforcement options. Hill told the council the activity occurred late at night (he reported incidents at about 12:30 a.m. and about 3:30 a.m.) and said residents and children who use the trails could be at risk.
Mayor Stroban asked the commander to take notes and follow up; staff indicated they would look into the 311 report Hill referenced. A council member later suggested the police commander take notes and the city would investigate signage and potential enforcement.
