Trumbull County approves $500,000 second installment for Valley Vision 2050

Valley Vision 2050 “is to stabilize and expand existing businesses, increase public awareness of arts and cultural industries, increase public participation in workforce training, expand education and employment opportunities and increase stability of nonprofit organizations and businesses,” commissioners said when introducing the item. The motion to pay the installment passed by roll call with Commissioners Bernard, Malloy and Rick Hernandez voting yes.
Commissioner Malloy, who led the discussion, described recent coordination among regional economic leaders and new state initiatives as signs that the valley is approaching a “turning point.” “We have businesses that want to come here,” Malloy said. “The economic future of Mahoning Valley, under the leadership of this group and the Valley Vision team, is in strong, strong hands.”
President Rick Hernandez noted the county and neighboring Mahoning County matched the commitment and pointed to recent briefings showing prospective company announcements. “We need progress. We need new people. We need new industry in here, to help keep the tax base down,” Hernandez said.
County staff and commissioners identified partner organizations involved with Valley Vision 2050 as Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, Valley Partners, the Western Reserve Port Authority, the Youngstown Foundation and the Youngstown‑Warren Regional Chamber. The transcript also references a state initiative called Lake to River and leadership by Alexis Sweeney; those organizations and individuals were discussed as part of the broader regional coordination.
Commissioners said the payment is the second installment of a one‑year commitment made by the prior board and is intended to match Mahoning County’s funding. Commissioners and several present partners posed for a group photo after the vote.
