Public Works lays out equipment needs and a prioritized list of streets for resurfacing
Summary
Public Works Director Jeff Sonberg presented a ranked list of equipment requests (multifunction trucks, macro paver, loaders) and a prioritized street resurfacing list; the department noted several vehicles are currently out of service and estimated a recent grant award of about $450,000 toward alley and right-of-way needs.

Public Works Director Jeff Sonberg summarized capital equipment requests and presented prioritized candidates for 2026 street resurfacing budgets.
Equipment priorities: Sonberg said several frontline trucks are out of service and proposed purchasing multifunction chassis with interchangeable beds to replace multiple single-purpose trucks. He listed five such multifunction vehicles as his top equipment ask, followed by a macro paver (a lower-cost surface treatment to extend pavement life), a four-speed loader replacement and a tracked excavator.
Why it matters: Sonberg said the multifunction approach reduces fleet complexity and provides rapid role changes (plow, dump, salt, mowing) while stretching capital dollars. He noted some current equipment is decades old and parts are difficult to source.
Street prioritization: Sonberg presented a ranked street list derived from internal inspections and complaints: Grand (20th to city limits) ranked first; 16th Street (DeBarrett corridor) and 16th Street (Ohio to New York) followed. He also listed Emmett (Broadway to Tower), East 10th (Ingram to Washington) and a series of alleyways used daily by sanitation trucks.
Grant and operations notes: Sonberg said the department recently learned it had been awarded approximately $450,000 for alley/right-of-way projects. He also described compost and scalehouse improvements and requested replacement loaders and a horizontal brush grinder to reduce outsourced grinding.
Ending: Council members asked for options to phase vehicle purchases to allow funding for other projects. Staff will include the prioritized equipment and street list in the FY2026 capital planning process.
