Populous consultant Kevin Cook told the MAPS Citizens Advisory Board that a 9-acre parcel donated to the city south of Bricktown can accommodate the MAPS-funded multipurpose stadium and potential future expansion.
Cook said the project team tested configurations that would support an initial Phase 1 stadium of about 10,000 seats designed to meet USL men’s standards and to host women's soccer and other events. The presentation emphasized that the site evaluation considered both the initial, funded phase and the potential for a later expansion toward a larger Major League Soccer–scale facility.
Cook described the donated parcel as largely flat with limited existing utilities but noted some overhead electrical lines that would be removed or relocated. The parcel sits in a developing district bounded by the Paycom Center, Bricktown Ballpark and the new convention center; Populous presented conceptual master-plan graphics showing how the stadium could occupy the 9-acre site and relate to private development in the surrounding district.
On budgets, the presentation described the preliminary construction budget for the initial Phase 1 work as approximately $53,000,000 in the consultant’s later slides and materials; the consultant said the 180-day preliminary design phase will refine cost estimates and develop renderings and 3-D models. Cook said the next project steps include stakeholder visioning sessions, a 180-day preliminary report and initial cost estimate work. He also noted that parking and adjacent private-development elements remain to be determined and will be addressed in later design stages.
Board members at the venue subcommittee meeting expressed that many detailed questions (for example, parking, final seating layout and ancillary uses) are steps beyond the current site-evaluation task and that more details will come as the project moves into preliminary design.
