Iowa City officials proclaimed Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and heard brief remarks from Human Rights Commission and Black Voices Project leaders about the local observance and its theme.
Mayor Pro Tem Mazahir Saleh read the proclamation on behalf of Mayor Bruce Teague, noting King’s role in shaping civil-rights laws and calling for renewed commitment to nonviolence and economic justice. The proclamation encouraged residents to attend the city’s annual march and Day of Service beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Eastdale Plaza and continuing at Mercer Park.
Roger Lusala (identified in the meeting as representing the Iowa City Human Rights Commission) highlighted four teachings of King—hope, standing up for what’s right, the cost of silence, and faith—and thanked the council for supporting diversity and equity. Royceann Porter (identified as former Johnson County supervisor and president of Black Voices Project) described the observance theme, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the spirit of nonviolence 365,” and invited everyone to participate in the march and program.
Both speakers framed the observance as a call to consistent civic engagement beyond a single day; Porter reminded attendees the event is “for everyone” and asked residents to participate in the march and bell-ringing ceremony at Mercer Park.
The proclamation and comments were presented as ceremonial business; no legislative action or funding decision accompanied the proclamation.
