Legislative Council IT staff demonstrated an electronic committee voting option that allows members to record attendance and yes/no votes via the legislative web application and that produces the committee report automatically for the clerk and calendar staff.
Cody Malloy, Legislative Council IT services director, said the system links the exact LC (Legislative Council) version of the bill to the active committee vote in the web application so members voting electronically see the exact document they are voting on and the clerk can generate a report with the motion, vote tally and member votes at the end of the action.
Malloy said the tool shortens the time between a committee action and when the vote appears in the public record — a process that previously could take several days while clerks re‑entered roll call data. He said the clerk can still perform the vote entry for members who lack a device or prefer a verbal roll call; chairs may also prefer to call a verbal roll and have the clerk enter the results in the electronic system.
Several senators tested the system during the orientation. Malloy said committee use is optional for each chairman; staff will provide screenshots and training materials and can run a live demo at a committee’s request. He said the system has been used in a small number of committees successfully and that Legislative Council will continue to refine the workflow.
