Redmond council congratulates Council Member Salahuddin on appointment to state legislature

At the start of its Jan. 7 meeting Council President Kritzer announced that King County Council had filled a legislative vacancy for the 48th Legislative District and that Council Member Salahuddin had been appointed to the state legislature.

"Representative Vandana Slaughter is now our new state senator for the 48th," Kritzer said during a moment of personal privilege, and she noted that as a result a legislative seat had opened. Kritzer said Council Member Salahuddin "was one of the three people who put their name forward and had the opportunity to be appointed today" and added, "I am extremely excited, slightly sad because we have to share him with Olympia."

Council Member Salahuddin accepted the announcement and thanked colleagues and staff. "I truly love Redmond, and I love the 48th LD, and I am incredibly honored to have this opportunity," Salahuddin said. He indicated he might offer longer remarks later but expressed appreciation to colleagues and staff assembled at the meeting.

The announcement was framed as an update from the council dais; the transcript records the council president relaying King County’s appointment and Salahuddin thanking the council. The council did not take a formal vote related to the appointment during the meeting record; staff and council members treated it as a personnel announcement and congratulated the newly appointed state legislator.
