The Mount Vernon City Council on Jan. 8 authorized an agreement with the Washington Trails Association (WTA) to continue trail maintenance and volunteer events on Little Mountain through the end of 2025.
Parks staff outlined planned projects including rehabilitation of Fred’s Trail, decommissioning of social or user‑created shortcut trails, drainage work on Sidewinder Trail, and installation of stairs on steep sections. The contract limits the city’s obligation to $13,500; staff said funding is included in the adopted 2025 budget. WTA provides volunteer crews and crew leaders for the work and will oversee the volunteer events.
Council approved the agreement on a voice vote with no recorded opposition. Staff said the work will reduce erosion from informal social trails and improve safety on steep trail segments.
