Commission members received a technical briefing Jan. 9 on a revised security-camera plan for Lakeville parks.
Carrie (last name not specified), who has led the procurement effort, said the installation vendor reviewed the site and recommended a slightly different camera layout after examining sight lines and data-retention needs. The vendor proposed three stationary cameras (covering the skate park, volleyball and basketball courts) plus an additional stationary camera specifically focused on the playground area. The plan retained a pan-tilt-zoom unit to cover a broader swath between the tennis courts and ballfields.
A vendor technical representative told the commission the system could be integrated into the town network and record to local storage in a cabinet at the maintenance shed rather than rely on paid cloud storage. That approach would permit different access levels for town users and allow the police and parks staff to share views with role-based permissions, the rep said. Carrie said the revised bid should arrive early next week and that the installation remained within the funds already set aside: "the bid came in 10 less than what we have," she said.
Commissioners noted a few installation details. The vendor flagged tree obstruction at one pole location and recommended limited trimming to clear camera sight lines. Staff said some branch trimming would be required before cameras are mounted. The vendor also proposed a monitor in the maintenance shed so staff or contractors working at the site could view live feeds and report suspicious activity.
What’s next: Commission members said they will review the revised quote when it arrives and expected work to move forward once the vendor and town staff finalize siting, pole work and any required electrical trenching. Carrie will provide updates to the commission when the revised quote is available.
Why it matters: Improved camera coverage around playgrounds and courts can help staff and police respond to incidents and reduce vandalism, but the commission emphasized minimal site disturbance and coordination on any required tree trimming or conduit work.
