District plans marquee replacement, clarifies messaging controls; National Council of Teachers of English requests classroom photography

District operations staff told the Committee of the Whole on Jan. 8 that the school marquee (digital sign) is 25 years old and no longer repairable. Karen (buildings and grounds staff) said the district solicited multiple quotes: one exceeded $100,000, a second was $65,000, and the lowest bid came in “just over $54,000,” which the presenter said would be roughly $6,000 under the board’s original $60,000 budget for the item.

Board members asked how the marquee content is controlled. Karen said the district maintains a documented hierarchy and request process for marquee messages — school items take priority and other requests are queued — and that the process mirrors how the district manages homepage messaging. Board members also asked about cybersecurity and safeguards for the sign’s message system; staff noted that IT would handle security questions and that protocols exist to manage who can post messages.

Separately, the Committee considered a request from the National Council of Teachers of English to photograph an English teacher — identified in the packet as Russ Obaie — in classrooms for NCTE materials. Administration said it had no objection and noted the district’s standard protocol allows students to opt out; the item will return for board acknowledgement in two weeks.

No formal votes were taken on either the marquee quotes or the photography request at the Jan. 8 Committee of the Whole meeting; staff said both items will be returned to the regular board agenda for final authorization or notification.
