Buellton council approves ordinance introduction to raise transient‑occupancy tax; second reading set

The Buellton City Council opened a public hearing on Jan. 9 and took the first formal step to implement a voter‑approved increase in the city’s transient‑occupancy tax (TOT).
City Attorney Greg Murphy told the council that the voters approved the measure in November 2024 and that adoption of an implementing ordinance is an administrative step to make the increase official. There was no public comment on the item.
Council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 25‑01 by title only and to waive further reading. City Attorney Murphy and staff confirmed the tax will not require the usual 30‑day waiting period after adoption and is targeted to go into effect Feb. 1 following the council’s second reading.
The council’s vote to approve reading by title only was unanimous.
City staff indicated the ordinance merely implements the will of the voters and did not note any immediate budgetary changes beyond collection of the revised tax rate after the effective date.
