Residents ask council for clarity on Goudie Park maintenance and stalled Michigan Avenue project

Vern Amos, Wayne Westland crossing guard supervisor and a Stellwagen resident, thanked the police and DPW for traffic changes at Taft School but asked whether the fire department still maintains Goudie Park. He said plants in the islands between the parking-lot aisles had been weed-whacked back to soil and that those plantings were intended to filter vehicle runoff before it reaches the river. "They were put there to filter the pollution that runs off our vehicles in the parking lot before it gets to the river," Amos said. He asked why city crews had cut back the vegetation.
Amos also asked about an apartment structure on westbound Michigan Avenue that he said had three floors added over a business area and had been boarded up. He referenced rumors the project stopped because the foundation could not support the added weight and asked the council for information about the project's status.
Nancy Pride, who spoke next, echoed concern about the plantings and said they were deliberately selected native plants intended to intercept pollutants. Pride asked the council to confirm why the vegetation had been removed.
Council members acknowledged the comments and signaled they would follow up with public works for clarification. No formal action was taken during the meeting; the comments were filed as public input.
